August 22, 2008 Albany State – Shaw football game tickets now on sale Purchase your tickets for the football game and catch all the exciting action of the 2008 Albany State University Golden Rams! Season ticket packages and tickets for the Albany State vs. Shaw University Bears game, which is Saturday, Aug. 30, are now on sale. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the Albany Municipal Coliseum in Albany. The game tickets, which are $17 for adults, are on sale at Capitol City Bank, Connie's Corner and Odyssey Records. Tickets will be on sale Monday, Aug. 25, on campus at the ASU Business Office Window, located on the second floor of the ACAD Building. Youth tickets are $7, but will be sold only at the ticket gate at Albany Municipal Coliseum on the day of the game. Admission is free to ASU students with valid IDs. Season tickets, which are good for ASU home games only, are also on sale. The $75 package includes tickets for games against the VSU Blazers on Sept. 2, the Stillman College Tigers on Sept. 14, the Miles College Golden Bears on Oct. 7 and the homecoming game against the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Oct. 14. Fans may still purchase a Golden Rams QuarterBack Club membership plan and get a great seat in the QBC reserved area for the Golden Rams home football games. Aug. 21, 2008 Albany State cheerleaders to conduct camp Hip-Hip Hooray! The Albany State University Golden Rams Cheerleaders will conduct a two-day mini-cheerleader camp for 4- to 18-year-old girls. The camp will start Friday, Aug. 29 at the ASU HPER Gymnasium from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. The Saturday, Aug. 30, session will start at 9 a.m. Camp participants will get a chance to attend the Albany State Golden Rams vs. Shaw University Bears football game on Saturday and perform chants with ASU cheerleaders during the game. Camp participants will get a chance to meet the 2008-2009 ASU cheering squad and learn exciting cheerleading skills, according to camp officials. “The camp will give young girls an opportunity to learn new skills, jumps, kicks and chants,” said Karla P. Holt, ASU cheerleading advisor. “Our new cheerleader squad for the 2008-2009 season will be available to teach basic skills to the girls.” The registration cost is per girl is $35 (non-refundable) and includes the game ticket, snacks/lunch and a camp T-Shirt. July 28, 2008 Albany State football players named to preseason All-SIAC team Eight Albany State University Golden Ram football players have been named to 2008 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Preseason All-Conference teams. The teams were selected by SIAC football coaches. Albany State was also selected by the coaches to finish in second place for the SIAC championship crown. Named to the SIAC First Team are Terry McGhee, Mario Fuller, Develle Miller and Montrell Neal. ASU players named to the SIAC Second Team are Larry Johnson, Marcus Pressley, Brian Richardson and LiRonnie Davis. Both junior defensive backs, Fuller and McGhee were key leaders for the Golden Rams defensive unit. Fuller led the Golden Rams with 74 tackles, including 48 solo tackles, and recorded 10 pass breakups and an interception. McGhee recorded 37 tackles and led the nation in Division II in passes defended with 18 pass breakups and six interceptions. Miller, a sophomore defensive lineman, had 35 tackles and eight sacks for the Golden Rams. Albany State was chosen by the SIAC football coaches to finish in second place to win the SIAC title, following Tuskegee University. Fort Valley State University was selected to finish in third place, followed by Morehouse College, Stillman College, Miles College, Lane College, Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University and Kentucky State University.
July 25, 2008 Tennis camp cancelled at Albany State The tennis camp, sponsored by the Lenny Gray Tennis Academy of Alabama and set to be held at Albany State University, has been cancelled, according to camp organizers. The camp was scheduled for Monday, July 28, through Thursday, July 31. Lenny Gray cited lack of interest as the reason for the cancellation. "We just didn't have a high level of interest in the camp," said Gray. "We plan to conduct other camps in the area in the future."
July 21, 2008 Albany State to host tennis clinic, camp in July Albany State University will be the host site for a free tennis clinic and camp in late July. Both events are conducted and sponsored by the Lenny Gray Tennis Academy of Alabama. Gray, who has taught tennis more than 31 years, has traveled throughout the United States conducting clinics, camps and coaching individuals how to play tennis. The tennis clinic will be held Saturday, July 26, and is free of charge and open to anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of tennis. The tennis camp is Monday, July 28, through Thursday, July 31. Registration deadline is Saturday, July 26, by 5 p.m. The cost of the camp is $40 per participant and $55.00 for families. Both the clinic and camp will be held from 8 a.m. until 12 noon at the Albany State University tennis complex. Scholarships are available for persons who are interested in attending the camp. July 21, 2008 Albany State Lady Rams add match to 2008 volleyball schedule The Albany State University Lady Rams have added a match to their 2008 volleyball schedule. The Lady Rams, the defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) champions, will play a non-conference match against Stillman College on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Lady Rams will defend their SIAC title during the 2008 SIAC Volleyball Tournament, which will be held at Kentucky State in Frankfort, KY on Nov. 12-14. If the Lady Rams win their eighth consecutive championship, they will compete in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament on Nov. 20-22.
July 16, 2008 Albany State Lady Rams announce 2008 volleyball schedule The Albany State University Lady Rams 2008 volleyball schedule has been announced by Athletics Director Dr. Joshua W. Murfree, Jr. and head coach Robert G. Skinner. Eight-time Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) champions will open the 2008 season with a tough schedule at home with a visit from the Savannah State University Lady Tigers on Sept. 2. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the HPER Gymnasium arena. After their home debut, the Lady Rams will hit the road, with stops in Mt. Vernon, Ga., to play Brewton Parker College in Mt. Vernon, Ga. on Sept. 3, and Augusta, Ga., participate in the Paine College Invitational on Sept. 5-6. The Lady Rams will start SIAC play against the Benedict College Lady Tigers on Sept. 8 in Columbia, SC, and play Claflin University Pantherettes on Sept. 9 in Orangeburg, SC, and the Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats on Sept. 15 in Fort Valley, Ga. The team will play the Valdosta State University Lady Blazers in a non-conference match on Sept. 17 in Valdosta before returning home on Sept. 19 to play the Paine College Lady Lions. The Lady Rams will host the SIAC Crossover Tournament on Sept. 25-27. The Lady Rams will play six home games at HPER Gymnasium arena during the month of October, including Benedict College on Oct. 4, Valdosta State on Oct. 13, Clark Atlanta on Oct. 23, Claflin on Oct. 24 and Alabama A&M on Oct. 29. The Lady Rams will end their regular season in a match against Fort Valley State on Oct. 31. “We have scheduled some tough opponents this season, including non-conference opponents Savannah State, Valdosta State and Alabama A&M and conference rivals Fort Valley State, Paine and Clark Atlanta,” Skinner said. “We wanted to play a tough schedule to help us get prepared for the tough regional tournament competition in November.” The Lady Rams will defend their SIAC title during the 2008 SIAC Volleyball Tournament, which will be held at Kentucky State in Frankfort, KY on Nov. 12-14. The NCAA Division II Regional Tournament will be held Nov. 20-22.

July 8, 2008 ASU QuarterBack Club to host annual football reception Albany State University Golden Rams football fans and supporters are invited to meet and greet the football coaches and hear exciting information about the upcoming season at a preseason reception. The Ninth Annual Preseason Football Reception will kickoff on Friday, Aug. 1, at 5:30 p.m. at Eula Lovett Hall at the Albany Municipal Coliseum. The reception is the official start of the 2008 season, according to head coach Mike White. "The football reception is a great opportunity for us thank our fans for supporting us throughout the past season and solicit support for the upcoming season," White said. "The Golden Rams are looking forward to a great 2008 season and being competitive in the SIAC and national championship series." The Golden Rams, who have won 13th SIAC championships, will kickoff the 2008 season on Saturday, Aug. 30, in a non-conference matchup against the Shaw University Bears, who captured the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship last season. July 3, 2008 SIAC cancels annual Football Kick-Off Luncheon The President’s Council of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and conference office, have cancelled the 2008 SIAC Summer Meetings/Kick-Off Luncheon, SIAC officials announced Thursday. The event will resume next summer at a date to be determined. “We would like to thank those media outlets, fans, coaches and student-athletes that have shown support of the SIAC,” Interim Commissioner George Mategakis said. “We look forward to working and seeing all of you in the coming academic year.” The SIAC will announce the Preseason All Conference Team, Predicted Order of Finish and its national television coverage on July 25, 2008. June 11, 2008 SIAC to hold annual Football Kick-Off Luncheon July 25 The Albany State University Golden Rams football program will be well represented as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) hosts its annual Football Kick-Off Luncheon on Friday, July 25, 2008. The luncheon and press conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Center Decatur at 130 Clairemont Avenue in Decatur, Ga. at 12:30 pm. In addition to Albany State head coach Mike White, the luncheon will feature head football coaches, players, and athletic directors from all SIAC football-playing institutions. The coaches will provide insight on the 2008 football season including expectations, key acquisitions and returning impact players. Each team’s coach and players will be available for one-on-one interviews following the luncheon. During the luncheon, the 2008 Preseason SIAC All-Conference Football Team and predicted order of finish will be announced. The SIAC television schedule will also be announced during the luncheon. May 14, 2008 Lady Rams capture SIAC All-Sports Award The Albany State University Lady Rams athletic teams were the recipients of the 2008 SIAC Commissioner’s All-Sports Award, presented to the teams with the “winningest” programs in the conference for the 2007-2008 season. This season marks the Lady Rams’ fifth consecutive honor. Morehouse College Maroon Tigers, who won in the male category, captured their second award in five years.. The trophies are given to the teams that record the best total of sports awards based on a points system initiated by the Athletic Directors' Association. Ten points are awarded for each SIAC championship, with seven points for second-place finishes and four points for third place finishes. In the women’s competition, Albany State tallied 44 points after winning conference titles in cross country, volleyball, softball and track & field. They also finished in third place in tennis. Since the restart of the Commissioner’s Cup in 2003, Albany State has won five consecutive awards. Tuskegee University finished second in the conference competition, compiling 27 points after finishing first in basketball and tennis, and second in cross country. Clark Atlanta University wrapped up a third-place finish with 19 points after a second-place finish in track & field, and third place finishes in cross country, softball and volleyball. Benedict College (18 points), Miles College (seven points), Kentucky State University (seven points) and Fort Valley State University (four points) rounded out the scoring. For the men’s competition, Morehouse College received 34 points after winning conference titles in track and field and cross country, and second place in tennis and golf. The win gave Morehouse their first overall title in the last five years. They tied with Albany State in 2005-06. Tuskegee finished in second place with 27 points after finishing first in football and tennis, and second in basketball. Benedict finished in third place with 21 points after winning the SIAC title in basketball. Albany State University (18 points), Paine College (17 points), Stillman College (10 points), Fort Valley State University (eight points), and Kentucky State University (eight points) rounded out the scoring. "We are very proud of all of our teams, especially the women’s programs, for achieving this accomplishment. Our student-athletes have worked very hard on the playing field and in the classroom this season,” said Stephanie Harrison-Dyer, assistant director of Athletics. “Our student-athletes are fine examples of the types of students we produce at Albany State."
May 9, 2008 Albany State to offer free girls summer sports camps Albany State University will now offer three free summer sports camps for girls in June. For Girls Only SVB Summer Sports Camps provide basic fundamentals and techniques of softball, volleyball and basketball to girls age 8-14. The softball camp will be held June 2-5 at the Lady Rams Softball Park. The Volleyball Camp will be held June 9-12 and the Basketball Camp will be June 16-19 at the ASU HPER Gymnasium. All three camps will start at 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. “We offer the softball, basketball and volleyball camps because we wanted to provide as many girls as possible an opportunity to participate in free summer camps and enjoy learning about these sports,” said Robert Skinner, head women’s volleyball, softball and basketball coach at ASU. “We hope this will encourage them to continue their involvement in sport programs." May 7, 2008 Albany State Golden Rams to sponsor summer youth football camp The Albany State University football program will sponsor a youth football camp in June. The Sixth Annual Mike White Rams Football Camp will kickoff June 12-14 for youth ages eight to 18. The camp will provide a better understanding of football, help build self-confidence and expose youth to a fun-filled camp experience with their peers, head coach Mike White said. "Not only will youths leave the camp with a better understanding of the sport, but they will be more self-confident in their abilities to play and also enjoy the camp environment," White said. "We have different levels at the camp, so it doesn't matter of they have played football before. Youths will return home knowing the fundamentals basic to the game." The Rookie Camp, designed for youth ages eight to 12, teaches the basic fundamentals of football. Skills such as passing, catching, running, kicking, blocking tackling will be introduced to each camper. More extensive work will take place in the offensive and defensive positions of the camper's choice. These skills will be perfected through the use of drills and game situations, White said. The Veteran Camp, open to youths ages 13-18, will have three parts: the skill camp, lineman camp and kicking camp. The skill camp is a working camp to help improve offensive and defensive skills. The lineman camp is also a working camp designed specifically for offensive and defensive linemen. Linemen will learn fundamental and techniques of line play and the latest procedures in strength and speed development. The kicking camp will teach the fundamentals and techniques of punting, kicking off and placekicking. Campers will be exposed to procedures in strength development. White and his staff at Albany State, along with middle and high school coaches, will lead the instruction at the camp. ASU student athletes will serve as camp counselors. May 2, 2008 ASU Golden Rams to sponsor summer youth basketball camps The Albany State University men’s basketball program will a series of camps this summer for youths interested in learning basketball skills. Chris Cameron’s Summer Basketball Camps include the Fundamental Camp on May 27-31, Shooting Camp on June 27-30 and Offensive Skills Camp on July 8-11. The camps also include team camps for AAU, middle and high schools. The camps will be held at Albany State’s HPER Gymnasium Arena. The five-day Fundamental Camp, open to boys and girls age seven to 18, is designed to teach basic fundamentals of basketball, team work and sportsmanship; instructions on offensive and defensive footwork; and will include motivational workshops that focus on sportsmanship, academic preparation, drug awareness and gang violence, according to head basketball coach Chris Cameron. The camp is Tuesday, May 27, through Saturday, May 31, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost is $80 per participant. The deadline to register is May 22. The four-day Shooting Camp will emphasize offensive skill development for junior and high school players. Camp participants will get specialized training on the mechanics and fundamentals of shooting, spot shooting, developing a shooting touch, improving free throw percentage and shooting of the dribble. The camp is Friday, June through Monday, June 30 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The cost is $40 per participant. The deadline to register is June 24. The three-day Offensive Skills Camp, which is open to boys age 12-18, will provide techniques and drills that will improve and develop both perimeter and post players’ offensive skills, including ball handling, passing skills, shot preparation, shooting technique and shot shooting. Post skills, including proper ‘posting up’ and ‘sealing’ techniques, post moves with proper football and finishing moves and post passing skills, Cameron said. The camp runs Tuesday, July 8, through Friday, July 11. The cost is $100 for commuter campers and $160 for overnight campers. The deadline to register is July 3. “The camps are a great opportunity for youths to develop and drastically improve their basketball skills,” Cameron said. “Youths will get to compete against other youths and build friendships.” In his second year as head coach, Cameron led the Golden Rams to the SIAC championship in 2007 and was named the Most Valuable Coach of the 2007 SIAC Tournament. His team also made an appearance in the NCAA Division II basketball playoffs last season. Participants of the Fundamental and Offensive Skills camps will receive a T-Shirt and lunch each day. Discounts will be given to honor roll students, families with multiple campers and ASU employees. Campers are eligible for only one discount. May 2, 2008 Albany State to hold annual national summer sports program Get ready for summer fun and activities by registering for the 2008 Albany State University summer National Youth Sports Program (NYSP). Registration will be held Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the East Albany Medical Center at 1712 East Broad Ave. Registration will continue from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Student Health Services Center in Room 138 of the ACAD Building at Albany State. Free medical examinations will be given to students interested in participating in the NYSP. Set to begin on Monday, June 2, at 8 a.m. in the HPER Gymnasium, the NYSP will provide a variety of structured sports activities and educational workshops for the economically disadvantaged youths, aged 10-16, in Dougherty County. Free transportation is provided for all eligible participants from June 2 through July 3. The daily operating hours are 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Albany State is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all eligible children free of charge. To be eligible to receive free meals, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced price meals in the National School Lunch Program. Children who are part of households that receive food stamps or benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) are automatically eligible to receive free meals. Participants of the program, in collaboration with the National Youth Sports Corporation (NYSC), will receive a free NYSP T-shirt, certificates, membership cards, trophies, awards and a variety of weekly incentives. April 29, 2008 Albany State to host golf event in June Some of the area's finest golfers are set to 'tee off' for the Sixth Annual Golden Rams Golf Outing on Saturday, June 7, at the Flint River Golf Course in Albany, Ga. The event, which will start at 8 a.m., is held annually to benefit Albany State University (ASU) football program, according to head football coach Mike White. The entry fee is $50 per player and can be paid during registration, which starts at 7 a.m. The entry fee includes green fees, cart and lunch. Interested golfers may enter individually and be assigned to a team or register with a four-member team. Hole sponsorships are $250 per hole. The first 50 players to register will receive a free golf package.
