Albany State Golden Rams to sponsor summer youth football camp
The Albany State University football program will sponsor a youth football camp in June.
The Sixth Annual Mike White Rams Football Camp will kickoff June 12-14 for youth ages eight to 18. The camp will provide a better understanding of football, help build self-confidence and expose youth to a fun-filled camp experience with their peers, head coach Mike White said.
"Not only will youths leave the camp with a better understanding of the sport, but they will be more self-confident in their abilities to play and also enjoy the camp environment," White said. "We have different levels at the camp, so it doesn't matter of they have played football before. Youths will return home knowing the fundamentals basic to the game."
The Rookie Camp, designed for youth ages eight to 12, teaches the basic fundamentals of football. Skills such as passing, catching, running, kicking, blocking tackling will be introduced to each camper. More extensive work will take place in the offensive and defensive positions of the camper's choice. These skills will be perfected through the use of drills and game situations, White said.
The Veteran Camp, open to youths ages 13-18, will have three parts: the skill camp, lineman camp and kicking camp. The skill camp is a working camp to help improve offensive and defensive skills. The lineman camp is also a working camp designed specifically for offensive and defensive linemen. Linemen will learn fundamental and techniques of line play and the latest procedures in strength and speed development. The kicking camp will teach the fundamentals and techniques of punting, kicking off and placekicking. Campers will be exposed to procedures in strength development.
White and his staff at Albany State, along with middle and high school coaches, will lead the instruction at the camp. ASU student athletes will serve as camp counselors.
The camp is $150 for overnight campers and $100 for campers who commute. Meals are included in both plans.
