Rams In The News!
May 11, 2009
Albany State Golden Rams change 2009 football schedule The Albany State University 2009 football schedule has changed, ASU athletic administrators have announced. The Golden Rams will open the 2009 season on the road against the Chowan University Hawks on Thursday, Aug. 27. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Garrison Stadium in Murfreesboro, N.C. Chowan, a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), replaces Shaw University on the ASU schedule, ASU Athletics Director Joshua W. Murfree said. Albany State and Shaw, also a CIAA member, inked a two-year contract to play during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Shaw, however, scheduled a game with CIAA rival, Elizabeth City State University, for the Saturday, Aug. 29, date. The Golden Rams have released Shaw from their schedule. "Albany State and Shaw agreed to play a two-year home and home schedule with Shaw playing here in Albany in 2008 and the Golden Rams playing in Raleigh, N.C. in 2009. It was a breach of our contract with Shaw," Murfree said. "Athletic administrators at both schools have made negotiations that are a win-win for both teams. On a humorous note, I think they were a little scared to face the Golden Rams again." In their second season competing in the CIAA, the Chowan Hawks, under head coach Tim Place, finished the 2008 season with 2-8 overall and 1-6 conference records. The Golden Rams will make a home debut and start SIAC play against Kentucky State University on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m., and travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Sept. 12 to play Stillman College at 5 p.m. (CST). The Homecoming game is set for Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. against Benedict College. The Rams will travel for three back-to-back games against Lane College in Jackson, Tenn. on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. (CST); Miles College in Birmingham, Ala., on Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. (CST); and Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Ga., on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. The Golden Rams will play at home on Oct. 24 against Tuskegee University and Morehouse College on Oct. 31. Both games are set for 2 p.m. Albany State will finish the regular season against Fort Valley State University on Nov. 7 in the 20th Annual Fountain City Classic. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga. For more information, contact the ASU Department of Athletics at 229-430-4754 or 229-430-4673. ###
