Albany State track and field athletes to compete at national meet
       Six student-athletes will represent Albany State University at the 2009 NCAA Division II Men and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 21-23 at the LeGrand Sports Complex at Angelo State University in Angelo, Texas. A total of 620 track and field athletes will compete in 43 events in the championships.Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.
      Two members of the ASU women's team, which has won five consecutive SIAC championships, will participate in the nationals, while four members of the men's team, which placed second in the SIAC championships, will compete for a national championship title.
      "We are excited to represent Albany State and compete for a national championship title," said head coach Kenneth Taylor. "We have several student-athletes in our programs who have attained world-class status. They have worked hard to get to the nationals and we look forward to claiming championship titles."
      Highlighting the women's qualifiers are sophomore Rakedia Wright and senior Shaneka Birdsong. Both Birdsong and Wright will compete in both the 100-meter hurdles with qualifying times of 14.06 and 14.27 seconds, respectively. Wright will also compete in the long jump, qualifying with a mark of 5.80 meters.
      On the men's side, senior Olaidipo Adeshina will compete in three events, the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.19 seconds, 400-meter dash with a time of 47.21 seconds and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team. Junior Ronnie McGirt enters the national meet as the number one qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.81 seconds. Freshmen Brent Phillip and Nehemyah Price will join Adeshina and McGirt on the 4 x 100 relay team, which qualified with a time of 40.85.
