Learning Support

The Learning Support unit in the Center for Excellence in Teaching Learning and Advising is a student's ticket to a professional career of his/her choice.

Students scoring below a combined score of 830 on the SAT or below 430 on the verbal or 400 on the math are required to take the COMPASS. Students scoring below 17 on the verbal or math portion of the ACT are also required to take the COMPASS .

Upon entering Albany State University a student must make the following scores on the COMPASS TEST: 60 on the English, 74 on the reading, and 37 on the math to exempt the Learning Support courses.

Learning Support reading courses are READ 0098 and READ 0099. Students scoring below 74 must enroll in 0098. However, they may have the opportunity to exit reading from the 0098 course. Students who do not exit from 0098 must enroll in the 0099 course.

The English courses are ENGL 0098 and ENGL 0099. Students scoring 30 or below are required to take 0098, and those scoring 31-59 are required to take 0099. A student who qualifies will have the opportunity to exit from either of these courses.

The math courses are MATH 0097 and MATH 0099. A student can only exit math from the 0099 course. Students scoring 29 and below are required to enroll in 0097 and those scoring from 30 to 36 are required to enroll in 0099 math.

STUDENTS, YOU MUST BE VERY SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR WORK IN LEARNING SUPPORT! WHAT YOU DO WILL DETERMINE YOUR DESTINY IN COLLEGE AND IN THE JOB MARKET.

Policies on Attempts and Dismissals

1. A student will have a maximum of twelve semester hours or three semesters, whichever comes first, to complete all requirements in reading, math and English.

2. During each semester of enrollment, a student must first register for all required Learning Support courses before being allowed to register for other courses.

3. Students may not withdraw from Learning Support courses unless they are withdrawing from all classes at the university.

4. Students who have accumulated 20 semester hours of college-level credit and have not successfully completed required Learning Support courses may enroll only in Learning Support courses until requirements are successfully completed.

5. A student may be suspended if he/she does not complete requirements for an area in twelve semester hours or three semesters. A student may be considered for readmission after three years of suspension.

6. Prior to suspension, however, a student may appeal for one additional course if he/she has reached the limit in only one area, and that area is an exit level course.

7. If a student is suspended for three years, he/she may be retested with the COMPASS and may be admitted without a Learning Support requirement if the score is 37 or higher in math, 60 or higher in English, and 74 or higher in reading.

8. If a score is below these minimums on the retest, the student may appeal for readmission, and upon being readmitted, may be allowed up to three additional attempts per area.

LEARNING SUPPORT ADVISORS

Learning support faculty and staff serve as academic advisors for students in the department. Students are assigned advisors based on the first letters of their last names. Learning Support students must meet with their advisors to plan their progression through the program and to schedule classes each semester since Learning Support students are not permitted to use the web registration process.
