Take a moment and imagine a person (for the purposes of imagination, it does not matter whether the person is a man or a woman). Imagine that this person intuitively discovers all of the secrets of the universe, but has no language to communicate those secrets to others. While that person is brilliant by his or her subjective standard, and would be considered brilliant if only she or he could communicate, that person would represent the greatest loss to humanity of all time.
In your time at Albany State University, you will discover that there are many disciplines or majors, many career paths to follow, but in the final analysis, there are only two means for expressing the ideas of those disciplines and careers. On the one hand, there is mathematics, which is the basis for the sciences; on the other, there is language, which, in the final analysis, is the heart and soul of human communication.
The faculty and staff of the department of English, Modern Languages, and Mass Communication is dedicated to helping Albany State University students master language, and by mastering language to help students to communicate their ideas and discoveries.
Language assumes at least three things: a communicator, a statement, and an audience, which receives and understands the statement. In the English program, we strive to insure that students are adept in the standard usage of the English, the major language in this country and the world for politics, culture, and economics. In the Modern Languages program, we strive to reveal the intellectual skills necessary to move from the comfort of a mother tongue to a foreign language which is often as rich, though different, as English. We also strive to prepare those with an inclination or talent for the pleasures of a bilingual experience. In Mass Communication, we strive to teach the contemporary means of amplifying human communication by the press, the microphone, and the camera.
Whether you only join us for the Core Curriculum courses in English and Modern Languages, or whether you are willing to take the challenge of pursuing one of our majors, we welcome you. Together we can insure that your thoughts and discoveries will not be lost but will become a part of the great human record.
