Field education lies at the heart of Social Work education at Albany State University. It gives the student the opportunity to integrate theory and practice and prepares students to become skilled Social Work practitioners. Field education is the assignment of social work students to an agency, an institution, or an organization to engage in hands-on experiences. Mutually beneficial working relationships between the University, the students and agencies have provided opportunities for professional growth, and employment experiences. Your field education will advance your learning as a relationship-centered, reflective practitioner, preparing you for work in a variety of human service settings.
A student is eligible to apply for admission to the Field Practicum after completion of all core requirements with the exception of approximately 15 hours, which should include SOWK 4441, and SOWK 4306, or any other Social Work courses that have not been completed. During field placement, Integrative Field seminar SOWK 4470 (3 hours) is the only course to be taken concurrently during the final semester.
The requirements for field are:
Complete all coursework
A minimum GPA of 2.50
Pass the Regents Exam prior to applying for field placement
Students must complete a separate application for field placement during the third week of the first semester as a senior, and/or during the third week of the semester prior to field placement.
