Chemistry Program Overview

Albany State University currently offers the Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and the minor in chemistry. The program of study for the chemistry degree is offered in the Department of Natural Sciences and is designed to meet the standards set by the American Chemical Society. The program prepares students to enter the workforce directly, in government and industrial labs, or to go on to advanced study in graduate and professional schools.

The chemistry major at Albany State University is provided with a solid background in fundamental chemical principles as well as hands-on laboratory experience and training using modern chemical instrumentation. This instrumentation is available for teaching and research in chemistry and include a 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, an infrared Spectrometer (IR), two High Pressure Liquid Chromatographs (HPLC), several UV- Vis Spectrometers, an Auto-System Gas Chromatograph, a GC-Mass Spectrometer, high speed centrifuges, a spectrofluorophotometer , an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM), Polarograph , refractometers , and electrochemical and electrophoresis equipment as well as computer workstations and chemical modeling software.

The curriculum is taught by four full time faculty, all with the Ph.D. in chemistry. Current faculty members are trained in Analytical Chemistry Biochemistry, Computational Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Additional part-time and temporary faculty as well as a lab technician provides additional support to the program.

Additional opportunities exist for students to develop their full potential and to succeed in their undergraduate career and beyond. These include seminars, workshops that offer preparation for graduate and professional schools and for preparing for standardized examinations, and research.

Chemistry majors are required to participate in research activities which can be done under the supervision of a chemistry faculty member on campus, off-campus during the summer at research intensive universities or in local or cooperate laboratories.
