The competition is an annual event celebrating National Engineers’ Week in Southwest Georgia to create awareness among students and their parents about the engineering profession. |
|
· |
The event is sponsored by Georgia Space Grant Consortium, an organization created and wholly funded by NASA to increase the participation of high school students in Science and Engineering careers as well as university students in Aerospace research. This helps NASA’s future workforce development project. |

The competition provides an opportunity for school students in Southwest Georgia to solve realistic engineering problems by designing and building a structurally efficient balsa wood bridge according to very demanding specifications. The efficiency is measured by the ratio of the breaking load to the weight of the bridge. A panel of judges from industry and research organizations conduct the testing and declare the winners. |
|
·
|
The competition is open to all high school and middle school students in Southwest Georgia. Any number of teams can participate from one school in their respective categories (high or middle schools). |
|
· |
The top 3 teams in each category are awarded commemorative prizes. The plaque in each category is given to the school with the best overall performance in that category. All participants (students and teachers) get free T-shirts. |

Announcement: The 2010 Annual Bridge Competition will be held on Saturday, February 27th, 2010 in Albany State University. The rules of the competition will remain unchanged from last year and can be viewed by clicking the link below. The exact venue will be announced later.
As promised earlier, we are including a few basic Bridge Building Tips. Teachers and mentors are requested to direct their students to this page which will hopefully make it easier for the uninitiated to attain a respectable score as well as refine the techniques for those who have built model bridges before. Also, included is a PowerPoint presentation that I made in a Technology Student Association conference two years ago.
