List of Current Scholarships

B.R. Tilley Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Dr. B. R. Tilley, the former president of Darton State College.  To be eligible, students must have at least a 3.0 high school or college GPA, must maintain the same GPA during the same academic year, must be a U.S. citizen who is enrolled or intends to enroll as a full-time student.  Applicants must be recommended or referred by a current faculty member of Albany State University and have a demonstrated financial need.

Carter Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students

This scholarship is in loving memory and honor of Margie and Jimmie Carter.  The applicant must be a current Albany State University student who demonstrates a commitment to excellence in their education and chosen field, enrolled full or part-time.

Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA, have completed at least 12 credit hours and be registered for at least 6 credit hours for the current or upcoming academic semester, have a letter of recommendation from a Albany State University faculty, staff member or an employer and complete an essay of no more than 2 pages, describing your career goals and how receiving this scholarship will assist you.  Preference will be given to non-traditional students (those who have been out of high school at least 5 years and are currently working toward a degree at Albany State University).

Charles D. Chitty, Jr. Scholarship

Student must have obtained at least 30 credit hours towards their designated field of study in Business, Finances, or Social Sciences, especially related to the field of U.S. Government or History. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and have a demonstrated financial need.

Charles M. Jones, Jr. Scholarship

This memorial scholarship supports young people pursuing a degree an arts related field, with preference given to students with an intent to major in the visual and performing arts. The recipient must have a high school GPA of 3.0 and for any previous college course work. Recipients are expected to play an active role in extracurricular arts related activities at Albany State University, to include performing or assisting in school plays, music performances, etc. Student must submit and essay of no more than two pages explaining the reason for majoring in an arts field of study.

Chris Addison International Scholarship

This scholarship supports international students who have not obtained U.S. residency, is described as foreign national who entered the U.S. with the intent to obtain a degree, has at least a 3.0 high school, college GPA or its equivalent, and must maintain the same GPA during the same academic year.  The student must be recommended by and affiliated with the International Student Services Office of Albany State University.

Christo Family Athletic Scholarships

This scholarship is intended to benefit student athletes who are enrolled full-time at Albany State University and are a member of an organized intercollegiate athletic team.  To be eligible, students must have at least a 2.5 high school or college GPA, or its equivalent, and be an outstanding student of character and has demonstrated leadership skills.  Preference may be given to a member of the baseball or the golf team who meets the aforementioned criteria and has a demonstrated financial need.  Applicants must obtain a recommendation/reference from a coach or the Athletic Director.

Cliff Bowling Scholarship

This scholarship is named in memory of Clifford J. Bowling, a former Darton State College student, and is awarded annually to a rising sophomore pursuing a degree in a science related field with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Criteria for this award is previous academic performance. Preference is given to students who intend to major in pre-veterinary medicine and students not receiving other scholarship aid. This scholarship recipient must be nominated by faculty and an application must be submitted to verify eligibility after the nomination.  Student must have completed at least 30 credit hours towards a post-secondary degree.  If a student does not have 30 credit hours but can demonstrate a history of veterinary volunteerism, a study of previous veterinary or medical related studies, and is recommended by a doctor of veterinarian medicine, the applicant may be considered.

Curtis Malone Memorial Scholarship

The Curtis Malone Memorial Scholarship is awarded through the College’s Health Sciences Division and was established in memory of Curtis Malone, a former respiratory care faculty member at Darton State College.  The student must be in good standing with the respiratory program, have a positive can do attitude and willingness to help others, have demonstrated a strong dedication and motivation to becoming a Respiratory Therapist and has demonstrated exceptional work ethic in their respiratory course work.  Applicants must also complete an essay titled, “Meeting your dreams by becoming a Respiratory Therapist”.

Preference will be given to a non-traditional students making a career change to Respiratory Care, particularly one that both the applicant and their family are making sacrifices to help the student achieve their dream.

Dr. Gordon Davis Scholarship for Nursing and Allied Health

This Scholarship is awarded in the fall to a Worth County High School Student majoring in Nursing or studying in an Allied Health related field.  Applicants must be a full-time student and must maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Dr. Jerry A. Walton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is given annually to a student who is pursuing a degree in Teacher Education. The recipient must have a 3.0 GPA, be classified as a sophomore (defined as having more than 30 credit hours), and be involved in extra-curricular activities. A committee of Social Science faculty may nominate the recipient.  An application must be submitted to verify eligibility after the nomination.

English Merit Scholarship

This is a scholarship awarded to students pursuing a degree in English. The student must have a 3.7 high school GPA or a 3.5 college cumulative GPA with no less than a B in any English course.

Faculty Memorial Scholarship

These scholarships are in memory of faculty and staff members of Darton State College, including Henry O. Adams, A. Doy Beck, Owen B. Murphy, and Susan Kavanaugh.  Eligible students are sophomores who exhibit outstanding academic potential. A member of faculty must recommend the applicant. Students must have a 3.0 GPA and must have completed at least 30 credit hours, and service in some capacity to the institution.

First Generation College Student Scholarships

This scholarship may be awarded to up to six students. New students who are first generation college students may apply for this scholarship. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be a new, incoming student (with no previous credit awarded from Albany State University), not have more than 12 earned hours from another institution or AP credit (or equivalent).  The student must be a first generation college student (neither parent possesses a college degree at any level), and must have or had a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Garry Whitehead, PhD Academic Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Garry Whitehead, Professor of Psychology, for the purpose of providing a scholarship for a student pursuing a degree in psychology. The recipient, must be nominated by the Albany State University psychology faculty members, must be a full time student and rising sophomore as a declared psychology major, must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA and a 3.0 GPA in psychology courses, and a demonstrated financial need.  An application must be submitted after nomination to verify eligibility.

To be eligible, students must have at least a 2.5 college GPA, must maintain the same GPA during the same academic year, and must also demonstrate financial need and have declared a major field of study.

Hosea Hall Vann & Lillie Eason Vann Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is given in loving memory of Hosea Hall Vann and Lilly Eason Vann for a Southwest Georgia nursing student in their second year of the Nursing program.  The student must be a second year nursing student, a resident of a Southwest Georgia County, have a 3.2 college GPA and maintain the same during the academic year and must have declared nursing as a major field of study.  The student’s financial need will also considered. Preference will be given to a Thomas or contiguous county resident.

James M. Barnett, Jr. Scholarships

These scholarships are funded by the James M. Barnett, Jr. Foundation. They are awarded to deserving students studying or pursuing a degree in music. The scholarship may be  subject to faculty nomination and a student audition.  The number and amount of awards given each semester vary.  Applications must be submitted by the deadlines each semester.

Joan Battey Chandler Educational Scholarship

To be eligible, students must have at least a 2.5 high school or college GPA or its equivalent, must maintain the same GPA during the same academic year. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and seeking either a certificate, a two-year or four-year post-secondary educational degree, and must have a demonstrated financial need.

Ken Tyson Scholarship

Eligible, students must have at least a 3.4 college GPA, must maintain the same GPA during the same academic year, and have completed at least 30 hours of post-secondary college coursework with the same cumulative GPA.  Preference will be given to a student who is/was a member of the Alpha Beta Gamma Association and has declared a major and show progression toward a degree or major in Business.  The applicant must have the recommendation of a business professor, chair, or dean of the College of Business.

Linda D. Ham Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually to first time freshmen, including non-traditional students, studying art.   The student must have a high school GPA of 2.7, submit an art portfolio and complete and essay describing the student’s reason for choosing art as an area of focus or intended major.

If no high school applicants meet the scholarship criteria, current Albany State University art students meeting the criteria may apply.

Richie Day Golf Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a first time freshman. To be eligible for consideration for this scholarship, a student must be eligible to play for the Albany State University Golf team, be a Georgia resident, have a 2.5 GPA, and submit a brief essay explaining their goals for the future.

Roselyn Ware Memorial Nursing Scholarship

The Roselyn Ware Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established by Ms. Ware’s estate to enable deserving students from Mitchell County, Ga. to pursue careers in nursing. She was a graduate of Albany Junior College, now Darton State College and left this legacy to help educate nurses.

The student must be a resident of Mitchell County, Ga., may be either a full, part-time, traditional, or non-traditional student, may be enrolled or accepted into the Nursing program and must maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Sabal Trail Scholarship: Deadline is January 30th and July 15th

To be eligible for the Sabal Trail Scholarship, students must have at least a 2.5 high school or college GPA, must maintain the same GPA during the same academic year and demonstrate financial need.  Applicant must have an intent to major in a science, technology, engineering, or math related field; be seeking a degree or career in an energy related infrastructure field; or seeking a degree or certificate in an emergency response related field.

School of Humanities & Social Sciences Dedication Scholarship

Scholarships are given to students in their second or subsequent semester at Albany State University. Students must be pursuing a program of study offered in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and show dedication to the major through involvement in performances, student organizations, and/or publications. Students must have a 2.0 GPA and must be recommended by a supervising faculty member.  An application must be accompanied by a letter of reference from a faculty advisor to verify eligibility.

School of Humanities & Social Sciences Merit Scholarship

The Scholarship is given to incoming freshmen or previously dual enrolled students who are pursuing program of study offered in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA. An application must accompany a recommendation from a former teacher, supervisor, or high school administrator.

Sharon Shearer Memorial Scholarship for Nursing

The Sharon Shearer Memorial Nursing Scholarship is in loving memory of Sharon Shearer and her love and dedication to the medical field.  The student may be a Georgia or Alabama resident with demonstrated volunteerism in the community, must complete and application and attach an essay of 500 words or less explaining why they are deserving of this scholarship and must have a 3.0 GPA.  Preference will be given to a MSA (Musculoskeletal Associates) employee.

Zella B. Wages Memorial Scholarship

To be eligible, students must have at least a 2.5 high school or college GPA, must maintain the same GPA during the same academic year, and have declared a major field of study.  Faculty may be the recipients of a scholarship, or assistance for higher educational study if so approved by the Foundation Board or its Scholarship Committee.  Preference will be given to a student with a demonstrated financial need.
