A Message from the President: Campus Housing

Dear ASU Family and Friends:

As we near the end of another successful semester for Albany State University, we continue to heartily plan for a productive fall 2019 semester. An element of that planning process includes addressing on-campus student housing needs.

Albany State University is committed to providing a valuable and beneficial experience to all students. Collectively, we have a targeted focus on improving our retention efforts for current students while also addressing the unique needs of incoming freshmen. As other institutions face drastically decreasing enrollment and low student retention experiences, ASU is stepping into its destiny with the opposite experience.  This change is positive for ASU’s future, but it has resulted in an increased demand for on campus housing.

We recognize that incoming freshmen need a structured on-campus community in order to begin a rewarding college journey and continue to thrive throughout their matriculation. The deadline for first year students to apply for housing is June 1, and students are encouraged to submit their housing application as soon as possible after they are admitted.

Returning residential students were eligible to apply for on campus housing starting February 1, and all students who submitted an application through March 18 have received a room assignment.  Those students who applied for housing on or after March 19 have been placed on a waiting list in the order of the date they completed their housing application. As ASU receives cancellations from students with an existing room reservation, the available room will be offered to the next student on the waiting list. The first come first serve approach to the allocation of available room spaces and wait list management is similar to the process at institutions across the country. In order to assist students with identifying potential off campus housing options, the Office of Housing & Residence Life has published a list of apartments in the local community on their website. An off campus housing fair took place on April 22, where 300 students in attendance were able to connect directly with representatives from apartment communities. Representatives from the Office of Financial Aid were also present to assist students.

We will continue to explore short and long term solutions for additional student housing. In the interim, I sincerely thank everyone for their patience and regard for our housing process.
