History was made at Albany State University in April 2005 when the Study Abroad Program, Kingston, Jamaica proposal submitted was approved by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia's Office of International Education. The collaborating University system of Georgia institution is Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, Georgia. The Study Abroad Program will take place at the University of Technology-Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica from June 24 to July 29, 2006. The program director is Dr. Titi Oladunjoye of the Department of Counseling and Educational Administration, College of Education.
Students from other University System of Georgia campuses are invited to enroll. Transient students must submit official application for admission and letters of approval from the Registrar of the institution in which they are enrolled certifying that they are currently eligible to return to the parent institution and that they have been granted permission to enroll at Albany State University for a specified period of time. The University requires that the letter of approval from the Registrar include a list of courses that the student should take while enrolled at Albany State University.
Jamaica is the largest of the English-speaking West Indian Islands. It is centrally situated in the Caribbean Zone and has a very unique educational system. Literacy rate is 85% for the population ages 15-over. Students taking part in the Study Abroad program will live and attend classes on the campus of the University of Technology-Jamaica. Kingston, Jamaica's capital, lies on the fertile plains of Liguanea between the cays and banks of the eastern coast and the towering Blue Mountains.
Classes: Two 3-hour credit courses will be taught during this study-abroad experience. The Technology and Computer Application class will be taught by faculty from Albany State University/Fort Valley State University. The Caribbean Cultural Expressions course will be taught by the University of Technology-Jamaica faculty. Classroom instruction in the Caribbean Cultural Expressions course will be supplemented by excursions and visits to historical places in Jamaica.
Program Fees: $2,856 (exchange rate fluctuations may necessitate changes in program costs up to 30 days prior to departure) Price includes round-trip airfare between Atlanta and Kingston, lodging and boarding, insurance, in-country travel and most ground transportation, course cost for the Jamaican class, excursions, site visits and entrance fees. Price does not include tuition for the ASU course , but all program costs may be covered by various student Financial Aid awards, including the PELL grant, student loans and the HOPE scholarship.
Financial Aid: All forms of financial aid currently utilized by students will be applicable to program fees. Albany State University students who intend to pay all or part of the program fees with financial aid should see their financial aid advisors as soon as possible to discuss their needs. Students from other USG institutions should contact their respective institution for instructions.
Travel Policy: All applicants will need a VALID PASSPORT to enter Jamaica. Medical and liability documents will be provided for each participant to complete prior to departure.
