2011-12 Learning Communities

Greetings Freshman Class of 2011:

This is your special invitation to become a part of a new and exciting academic program at Albany State University – LEARNING COMMUNITIES.  This is an exciting way to take required core courses (2 or 3) and engage with a cohort of students and the faculty team both inside and outside of the classroom. This program is developed to enhance learning and to increase retention and graduation rates.

What are Learning Communities?

Learning Communities are classes that are linked or clustered during the academic semester, often around an interdisciplinary theme, and enroll a common cohort of students. Learning communities provide a variety of learning experiences to build community between students and teachers.

What are the Benefits of Participation?

  • Increased opportunity for academic success – studies have shown that participation in a learning community is positively linked to engagement as well as student self-reported outcomes and overall satisfaction with college.
  • Increased opportunity to graduate on time
  • Form collaboration with classmates and professors outside of the class setting
  • Enhanced intellectual development
  • Fun while learning

There are seventeen (16) learning communities available. You are invited to consider becoming a part of one of them. A list of the fall 2011 learning communities is attached. Please call or email the director listed to find out more about this program or you may contact me using the information below. I challenge you to realize your potential by joining a learning community.
