Albany State University Summer Programs
The Black Youth and Entrepreneurship Workshop is for high school students in the Southwest Georgia area who are interested in small business ownership and management. Emphasis is also placed on personal development and career planning. The one-week workshop will provide role model, cultural and recreational activities, microcomputer exercises, classroom sessions, a field trip, and the opportunity for each participant to experience residence life on a university campus. The HCOP Junior Enrichment Program is a six-week intensive university review and preparatory program for juniors and seniors interested in health careers. This program’s goals include improving test-taking skills on standardized tests, skill development for acceptance in a health professions schools and to aid students in acquiring financial aid awards for pursuing health care careers.
The HCOP Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week college preparatory program for economically and educationally under-represented students who are interested in health careers. SEP prepares students for greater success in college level science and mathematics courses.
Students enrolled in the JEP and SEP programs will visit health care education facilities at Tuskegee University, Mercer University, the Morehouse School of Medicine, Georgia Health Sciences University, Florida A&M University and Emory University. The Upward Bound Trio Summer Residential Program will be held June 1 through July 8. Students in this six-week program will live in ASU residence halls and receive intensive academic instruction in mathematics, natural sciences, English and literature, and foreign languages. Rigorous academics will ensure that each participant gets the full taste of “collegiate life.” In addition, the Upward Bound staff will teach SAT and ACT prep classes, study skills, mentoring, and life skills. Educational activities and competitions will allow participants to showcase their academic skills in science, math, reading, arts and physical education. The Summer Transportation Institute (STI), a nonresidential program funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the Georgia Department of Transportation that takes participating students to visit regional transportation sites, is designed for students in grades 9-12. The program will be held in the ASU Criminal Justice building May 31- June 30 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eligible students for the four-week program must be at least rising ninth graders. The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) provides a variety of structured sports activities and educational workshops for economically disadvantaged youth ages 10-16 in Dougherty County. The program starts June 6 and lasts until July 8. NASA’s Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) is an innovative national program designed specifically to reach students in kindergarten through 12th grade who are traditionally under-represented in careers involving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program utilizes a series of unique hands-on, inquiry-based classroom curriculum enhancement activities. In addition to being aligned with national math, science, and technology standards, each activity draws heavily on NASA research and encompasses each of NASA’s strategic enterprises.The program will consist of four, one-week sessions from May 31-June 24. Grades K-5 will be housed at Radium Springs Elementary School and grades 6-12 will be housed at Merry Acres Middle School. Each SEMAA session will operate Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All student registrations are due no later than Friday, May 20. Kiddie College gives students in kindergarten through eighth grade the opportunity to get a feel for life as a college student. Students are provided supplemental instruction in the areas of mathematics, science, language arts and reading. Participants will also learn etiquette, music, sports and recreation, leadership, and arts and crafts. Program dates are June 6 to July 1.
