ASU Civil Rights Activists Scholarship Campaign
Dollars for Scholars – Is a scholarship fundraising campaign online designed to raise money for a four year need and merit based scholarship that will instill the values of Albany State University’s Student Activists from 1961 in the hearts and minds of future generations of the university's students. How the campaign works is we would like for everyone to donate a dollar and then tell someone else about the scholarship and they donate one dollar. We understand that many people have been hard hit by our nation’s current economic crisis and this campaign is a way for anyone to donate. Our ending goal for the scholarship is $100,000.00. These funds will then be used in an endowment to keep the scholarship available for decades to come.
The values of the university’s activists from fifty years ago were grounded in a sense of community. Their sense of community charged their efforts to step in harms way and push for the civil rights of fellow Albanian and Americans across this nation. Their values have been used internationally by many countries as an inspiration to fight for human rights. With these values in mind, Albany State University wants to plant this community minded seed in each of the hearts of future generations of students at the institution so that the 1961 Civil Rights Activist's work will be raised to the global level. We want Albany State's students to lead the fight on the world stage when human need arises either from some devastation or in diplomatic relations. This is the next level for the struggle in the twenty-first century.
Those future Albany State University students that receive the scholarship will have to complete 10 hours a week in community, national or international service, maintain a 3.5 grade point, complete a report at the end of each semester, and be involved in at least one campus organization. After four years, we want our students to become some of America’s top leaders in this country.
All proceeds from your donation go to the Albany State University Foundation, which is a 501 (3) c organization, so donations are tax deductible. If you should choose to donate more than a dollar to our cause this will help the Albany State University Civil Rights Celebration Committee meet its financial goal even faster. Make your checks or money orders payable to Civil Rights Scholarship/Albany State University Foundation. The address to send your financial gift is at the bottom of the page. It is now also possible to donate online with a credit card.
It is our hope, that just like the small grassroots groups came together to destroy segregation, America will come together to raise money for this scholarship so there will be a legacy to develop future leaders to continue in the struggle!
