ASU’s main campus is located in Albany, GA and currently enrolls over 4,000 students while the HPER department has over 220 majors (roughly 6%). The university grounds are positioned between the natural sand dunes to the east and the mighty Flint River on the west in rustic Southwest Georgia. This historic location is ideal for academic preparation and physical/recreational pursuits.
The HPER department strives to prepare professionals who will be effective leaders, advocates for social justice, and life-long learners. We believe that teaching and learning are a dynamic, interactive, and continual process based on empowering effective communication among learners. We are cognizant that effective pedagogical skills will foster dynamic leaders inside and outside the classroom.
The curriculum of the HPER department is designed to meet and exceed state and national accreditation standards and to prepare students for their professional field of choice. At ASU, the HPER department offers two Bachelor of Science degrees: Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education-Teacher Education certification and a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. In addition, the HPER department offers a Masters in Education in Health and Physical Education.
ASU’s HPER mission is to equip students and stake-holders with the skills and ability needed to enhance the health and welfare of society through the acquisition of knowledge, the significance of discovery, and the value of communication that leads to perpetual participation in physical and recreational activities. ASU’s HPER department will produce graduates who are equipped with knowledge, attitudes and professional skills for the modern era and who lead their fields.
ASU’s HPER department is an exciting opportunity for those seeking a quality education and I trust that you will consider us as you continue your educational journey.
