Suspendisse et elementum elit. How does society control the behavior of its members? Social Control is the techniques and strategies a society uses to prevent deviant behavior. These techniques and strategies are called sanctions, which can be positive, negative, formal, and informal. The purpose is to provide Social Order, or a baseline, for how one should behave in society or specific social settings. Comedian #1...I said no mate, get your own crumpet. Audience[LAUGHING AND APPLAUDING] Positive Sanctions are actions and techniques used to encourage individuals to act a certain way, or continue to act a certain way. Positive sanctions can be simple encouragement type techniques or more complex and meaningful actions. Have you ever attended a comedy show or watched one on television? The comedian is receiving a positive sanction when the audience laughs at his or her jokes. Comedian #1You know, everybody says oh, oh well, you know, English guy, of course he likes crumpets. He’s an English guy. You know I like other things, too. I like tea.” Audience[LAUGHING] The same principle applies to a college athlete who makes a great play during a game. Crowd[CHEERING AND APPLAUDING] In this instance, the coaches and spectators applaud and scream in favor of the big play. A more complex and meaningful positive sanction may include receiving a promotion at work, or a salary increase. These positive sanctions represent hard work and discipline in a formal setting. Negative Sanctions are actions and techniques used to discourage individuals to act a certain way, or discontinue to act a certain way. Just like positive sanctions, negative sanctions can be simple gestures to discourage, or complex actions. In the case where we laugh at the comedian’s jokes, we may also find their jokes not funny, evoking us not to laugh. If the comedian finds that several audiences are providing negative sanctions, which in this case is not laughing, he or she may change or delete those particular jokes from their set. Comedian #2...Fell off the perch! Random Person[CLAPPING SLOWLY] Hey[TAPPING MIC 3X]is this thing on? I can hear you guys breathing. One can apply negative sanctions when disciplining a child. Have you ever given a child a dirty look when they have done something wrong, but not seriously wrong? That dirty look, if effective, is a negative sanction. More complex actions involving negative sanctions can be applied to the court system. One who is sentenced to prison or probation has been handed a negative sanction. Formal Sanctions can be positive and negative. However, formal sanctions are usually applied under the influence of an authoritative entity. A prison sentence or probation sentence is applied by a local, state, or federal criminal justice system. The prison sentence which is formal and negative would be categorized as a Formal Negative Sanction. A college degree awarded by a college or university are authoritative structures. The degree, which is formal and positive would be categorized as a Formal Positive Sanction. Informal Sanction can also be positive and negative. Comedian #2...like a Doberman?Audience[SILENCE] Informal Sanctions tend to be spontaneous actions from an individual or group. Laughing at a comedian’s jokes would be informal and positive, and called an Informal Positive Sanction. Comedian #1...I said next time put the applesauce in the glass. Thank you. Audience[LAUGHING AND APPLAUDING] On the other hand, not laughing at a comedian’s jokes would be informal and negative, known as an Informal Negative Sanction. Comedian #3...it will all come out alright in the end. Audience[GROANING]
