Albany State University (ASU) Master's Degree REAL Grant
The Reality-based Enhanced & Applied Learning (REAL) Grant & HBCU Ram Grant is a federally funded student traineeship supported by the U.S. Department of Education. This grant is designed to assist minority and/or economically disadvantaged (low-income) students who are currently enrolled in select ASU graduate programs.
Eligible programs include:
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with concentrations in:
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Nurse Educator (NE)
  • Nursing Informatics (NI)
  • Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) — Summer admission only
  • Master of Science in Integrated Biotechnology (MSIB) — Spring and Fall admissions
Admission Deadlines:
  • Summer 2025: March 1
  • Fall 2025: June 15
  • Spring 2026: November 1

The major student support objectives of the grant are to:

  1. Improve academic success: through provision of mentors and tutorial services as indicated to promote retention
  2. Successful student recruitment and progression, of well qualified candidates and supply a more diverse group of nurses to the workforce, and retain students ambitions for those pursing a graduate degree in the areas of nursing; Family Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Educator.

Students must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.00. Students should also indicate a plan such that the fellowship will increase the student’s ability to take more classes. Students who meet these criteria will be eligible for Nursing Fellowships.

ASU Graduate Assistantships

Albany State University provides a limited number of graduate assistantships to qualified students (regular graduate admission and GPA of 3.0 or higher). Graduate Assistantships are awarded to promote research, teaching and service among graduate faculty and students at the institution and to provide graduate students the opportunity for professional development and scholarship to prepare them for leadership roles in their chosen fields.

Assistantship appointments are at the discretion of the department and subject to approval by the Graduate School. Students should contact departments for availability and details of the available positions. Students receiving a graduate assistantship will be notified by the Graduate School.
