Albany State University Students Earn Honors at Southeast Model African Union Conference

Albany State University (ASU) students participated in the 2025 Southeast Model African Union (SEMAU) Conference, held November 19–22 at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. SEMAU is a highly regarded experiential learning simulation that brings together students from across the region to debate, negotiate, and draft resolutions on issues impacting the African continent.southeast model african union conference

ASU was represented by nine student delegates, all serving as representatives of South Africa. The delegation showcased the university’s academic diversity, with students majoring in Health and Human Performance, Forensic Science, Political Science, Business, Health Science, Accounting, and joint tracks in Political Science and Forensic Science. Their varied academic backgrounds strengthened the team’s ability to approach policy topics with interdisciplinary insight.

“Attending the SEMAU Conference was a truly enriching experience for both our students and faculty advisors,” said Chukwuemeka Onyeri, International Education Coordinator. “It was a space where voices were heard, confidence was nurtured, and meaningful connections blossomed across campuses. Together, we grew not just as individuals, but as a community united by curiosity, collaboration, and the shared pursuit of excellence.”

Throughout the four-day conference, ASU delegates distinguished themselves by delivering well-researched arguments, engaging in collaborative negotiations, and contributing to the drafting and refinement of policy resolutions. Their work reflected a thorough preparation process that included multiple simulations, committee-specific research, mastery of African Union protocols, and practice using Robert’s Rules of Order.

ASU students served on six committees: Executive Council; Social Matters; Economic Matters; Peace and Security; Environment and Climate Change; and Democracy, Governance & Human Rights. Their performance earned recognition across the conference. All nine students and five faculty advisors received Certificates of Participation, and ASU delegates assigned to the Peace and Security Committee and Democracy, Governance & Human Rights Committee were awarded Certificates of Outstanding Delegate for exemplary leadership and engagement.

For many students, SEMAU offered a transformational academic experience. “I had a pleasant experience at the SEMAU Conference,” said Oluwawemimo Williams, a junior Accounting major. “I was able to put my public speaking skills to use while also developing them. It felt great to connect with peers from other universities and colleges as well.”

SEMAU typically brings together more than a dozen institutions each year, and the 2025 conference welcomed approximately ten universities, including Albany State. ASU has been a longstanding participant in the event and continues to view SEMAU as an essential platform for experiential learning, diplomacy, leadership development, and global awareness.

ASU’s delegation represented South Africa with professionalism and diplomacy, contributing meaningful dialogue and building coalitions with peers from across the region. Their participation underscores Albany State University’s commitment to preparing students for leadership roles in an interconnected world.
