Commencement Spotlight: Darius Dilworth, Master of Social Work
Future Plans: Second Lieutenant (2LT), Armor Officer, United States Army
Darius Dilworth, a 25-year-old native of Jonesboro, Georgia and ASU alumnus (’24),
will graduate on May 9 with a Master of Social Work from the Albany State University
College of Business, Education, and Professional Studies. 
Before entering the graduate program, Dilworth previously earned a bachelor’s degree of social work from ASU in 2024. During his time at Albany State, Dilworth was an active member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), demonstrating his commitment to the profession and its core values. His academic journey included hands-on experience through internships at Pruitt Health Nursing Home during his undergraduate studies and Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI) during his graduate program, where he gained practical experience supporting patient care and social services.
Dilworth also dedicated time to community service, volunteering at the Albany Early Childhood Education Center, where he contributed to early childhood development and support initiatives.
Following graduation, Dilworth will embark on a new path of service to his country. On May 21, he will report to Fort Benning, Georgia, to begin his career as a Second Lieutenant (2LT) in the United States Army, serving as an Armor Officer.
His transition from social work to military leadership reflects a continued commitment to service, discipline, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
What motivated you to learn more about your field?
I recognize the importance of providing culturally competent care and representation
to underserved communities. I am also driven to support and empower individuals facing
barriers like those experienced within my own community.
Why did you choose ASU?
I chose ASU because of its strong reputation in social work and its proximity to home,
being only two hours away.
What do you love most about your chosen profession?
I value the opportunity to help and advocate for underserved populations while making
a meaningful impact on individuals’ lives.
Who has made the biggest impact on you, and who do you consider a role model at ASU?
Dr. Jerry Daniel was a significant mentor and professor in the social work program
whose guidance had a lasting impact on me. Additionally, MSG Sean Avery, my ROTC instructor,
taught me invaluable lessons about leadership and being a Soldier.
What are you passionate about outside of your education?
I enjoy working out, reading, and mentoring youth.
What advice would you give to other ASU students?
Avoid procrastination, start assignments early and make consistent progress each day.
What would you say to a high school student about choosing ASU?
Enjoy your college experience but always prioritize your academics, work hard and
stay focused.
