Fostering Through College

Mission:
The mission of Albany Fostering through College FTC) is to create a safe and supportive environment for the current and former foster youth, orphans, wards of the state and homeless students; and to help them reach their maximum potential as leaders of Albany State University and beyond.

Philosophy:
Fostering through College is a threefold program; the program will assist in the development of prospective and current students at Albany State University and Darton State College, who are either homeless, have experienced homelessness, foster care, and or ward of the state.

Program Background Information:
Entering and navigating through college is one of the most challenging experiences that a young adult will face in their life. During this period, students are trying to understand whom they are and what they want to do in life. They are in desperate need of family support, mentorship, and assurance that basic needs will be met while continuing to obtain life experiences. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs suggests that if a person’s basic needs, sources of support and guidance, social connection are not provided, the likelihood of the individual succeeding in life; let alone college, is strongly diminished. Like many other college campuses across the nation. Albany State University administration, faculty, and staff have identified a major opportunity that will help a vulnerable population at our university succeed against all odds.

Research shows that 70% of youth who are aging out of foster care plan to attend college – but only 3% to 11% will complete a bachelor’s degree (Marklien, 2012). In 2016, Albany State University had approximately 25 students who have been identified as foster youth, independent, former foster youth or homeless. FTC is excited to help these students beat the odds to obtain a greater style of life.

Sincerely,
DeMarcus Green
