Chair's Message

Dr. Hood's PhotoWelcome to the Department of Visual and Performing Arts’ website! We are making history as we transition on several levels: a new degree program with exciting new opportunities for students, a diverse and knowledgeable faculty with a wealth of expertise and talent to share, and at last, a new Fine Arts facility. The department offers the Bachelor of Arts Degree with concentrations in visual art, music, music education, and theatre. The department also offers minors in visual art, music, music industry. All ASU students have the opportunity to participate in performance ensembles in music, theatre and dance, or take advantage of the certificate programs in church music or graphic art.
The mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts is to provide high quality academic and artistic education for the members of the ASU community. The department’s mission is central to the University, because the arts are at the heart of intellectual, social, and personal development and human interaction.
In addition to rigorous academic and artistic curricula, the Department of Visual and performing Arts provides core curriculum courses in Art Appreciation, Music Appreciation, Theatre Appreciation, and Dance Appreciation. This website provides general information that is pertinent to all students enrolled at Albany State University as well as guidelines and courses of study for each concentration offered through the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts is home to the T. Marshall Jones Performing Arts Series which is an added resource for the ASU and Southwest Georgia communities. The series provides world-class performances in art, literature, music, theatre, and dance throughout the academic year. Also features are faculty and guest recitals, departmental ensemble concerts and much more.

To meet the objectives of this mission, the Department offers the following:
