Commencement Spotlight: Abree Kirsch
ASU COMMENCEMENT SPOTLIGHT: ABREE KIRSCH, BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN FORENSIC SCIENCE
CRIME SCENE TECHNICIAN, ALBANY POLICE DEPARTMENT
Abree Kirsch, a native of Orange City, Florida, will graduate on Dec. 13 with a bachelor's
degree in forensic science. During her time at Albany State University, she completed
an internship with the Dougherty County Coroner’s Office. Abree actively engaged in numerous forensic
science activities with the Forensic Science Club, and both completed and later volunteered
with the Albany Police Department’s Crime Scene 101 course. Academically, she excelled
as a Summa Cum Laude graduate and was recognized as a high-ranking student with a
4.0 GPA in March 2024.
What motivated you to learn more about your field?
I was inspired to pursue this field after watching the TV show First 48, which motivated
me to change my major from education to forensic science. Attending the Crime Scene
101 course deepened my interest even more. The Crime Scene Technicians I met showed
such passion for their work and demonstrated how meaningful and impactful this career
can be, which pushed me to fully commit to the field.
Why did you choose ASU?
I originally chose ASU because I wanted to stay close to home. I began as an education
major but switched to forensic science after my first semester. I am extremely glad
I stayed, because ASU introduced me to an incredible program that I may not have discovered
elsewhere.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to continue working with the Albany Police Department as a Crime Scene Technician
and grow through the training opportunities provided by the department. I also plan
to pursue my master’s degree to continue advancing in the field.
What do you love most about your chosen profession?
What I love most is being able to provide closure to victims and their families. That
purpose is the driving force behind why I chose this profession. Crime Scene work
is essential to solving cases, and I take pride in the role we play through evidence processing
and investigation.
Who has made the biggest impact on you, and who do you consider to be a role model
at ASU?
My parents have had the biggest impact on my life. They’ve always pushed me to improve
and never give up on my goals. Within ASU, I consider both of my forensic science
professors to be role models. They consistently challenge every student to grow, learn,
and perform at their best.
What is your favorite memory from your time at ASU?
My favorite memories come from the time spent in the classroom. We always found something
to laugh about, no matter the day, which made class so much more enjoyable. I also
really loved attending different campus events.
What advice would you give to other ASU students?
Never give up. College comes with challenges, and you may have difficult moments along
the way, but once you begin your career and prepare to graduate, everything becomes
worth it. Never be afraid to ask for help; professors cannot support you if they don’t know you’re struggling.
What would you say to a high school student about choosing ASU to further their education?
I would tell them to absolutely choose ASU. The campus community feels like home,
and there is so much support available that you will never feel alone. I truly believe ASU
is a great place for anyone seeking a welcoming, supportive, and growth centered college
experience.
