Highlight Tips for Parents and Guardians

  1. File your taxes early. Tax records are needed for your student to complete the annual FAFSA. Often parents wait, causing the student to file their FAFSA late. Without a completed FAFSA students may not receive aid. Without aid, most students can not afford to pay the University bill. Make time for verifications, submission of additional documents, etc. by filing early and making sure that your student immediately files his or her FAFSA.
  2. Assist your student with understanding his or her University bill. Students sometimes do not calculate their bill accurately and may not apply for enough funding to pay their entire University bill. This often leads to parents applying for additional loans late, which leads to a high speed race to beat the payment deadline date.
  3. Understand the housing vacate process. As the payment deadline approaches housing begins to communicate to its residents who have a remaining balance on their student account. The purpose is to inform them of what they need to do to remain in their assigned space. There are three letters issued.
    • The Outstanding Balance letter, which is the first letter issued, informs the student that their University account does not reflect a $0 balance. This is NOT a vacate notice, but a reminder to make sure that they clear their balance prior to the payment deadline date, which may be found on the academic calendar.
    • The Reinstatement letter, which is the second letter issued, informs the student that his or her classes have been administratively dropped (purged) and that they must get their classes reinstated in order to remain in housing. Reinstatement also requires that funding be secured to cover the balance. This is NOT a vacate letter.
    • The Vacate letter, which is the last and final letter issued, informs the student that the payment deadline has ended and that they must vacate the residence hall. Students have 48 hours to vacate their assigned space. Students may not reside in another paying residents space. If special arrangements are needed, the student should start by speaking with his or her Hall Manager.
  4. Secure renter's insurance for your student. Renter's insurance is relatively low priced and can save students and parents a lot of money in the case of an incident. Recently, a student innocently started a kitchen fire resulting in thousands of dollars in damage. Because she did not have renter's insurance she had to pay $65,000 out of pocket. Avoid unnecessary costs by insuring your student's belongings.
  5. Get to know your student's hall management staff. Ask for their email or contact information. These HRL team members are there to ensure that your student is safe, comfortable and educated outside of the classroom. They often are in direct contact with your student and any issues that may occur. Getting to know them will assist you in having a point of contact when the need arises.
  6. Understand the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law states that campus faculty and staff are not allowed to share a student's information without his or her consent. It is applicable to all students above the age of 17. Students may grant permission in writing through the Housing and Residence Life Office, but may also retract the permission at any time.
