Academic Support Services
Service Offerings

Academic Support Services supports Albany State University in its commitment to providing students with services and programs that are designed to improve academic success.  Services provided include academic success orientations and resources, workshops, course, peer, group, and residence hall tutoring along with germane supplemental instruction and programmatic support opportunities to achieve the overarching goal of positively impacting student learning, student achievement, and persistence.

Math and Writing Centers

Math and Writing Centers provide support for aligned subjects with special focus for ENGL and MATH gateway courses. 

Math Center

Staffed by fulltime ASU staff members who are subject-matter experts in their field

    • Available for all ASU Math courses
    • May be found online through TOD or in-person at both East and West Campuses
    • Accepts walk-ins and appointments

Writing Center

Staffed by fulltime ASU staff members who are subject-matter experts in their field

    • Available for all ASU English and Writing courses
    • May be found online through TOD or in-person at both East and West Campuses
    • Accepts walk-ins and appointments

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring provides student-led tutoring services support where high-achieving students provide one-to-one or group tutoring and study sessions to enhance course-specific content understanding and study skill development. 

Tutoring services are provided by high-achieving students

    • Available for a wide variety of courses
    • May be found online through TOD or in-person at both East and West Campuses
    • Accepts walk-ins and appointments

Embedded Tutoring

Embedded tutoring provides course-aligned, classroom-led tutoring support where Embedded Tutors are assigned to a specific class to provide personalized classroom tutoring support, while also providing extended tutoring services in the similar role of peer tutoring to facilitate out-of-the-classroom individual and group learning and study sessions. 

Classroom-led tutoring services are provided by high-achieving students

    • Available for a wide variety of courses
    • Provides peer tutors within the classroom for personalized classroom tutoring support
    • Provides course-specific individual and group study sessions
    • May be found in assigned classroom locations or with peer tutoring support

Lead Tutoring

Lead tutoring provides professional-led tutoring support where professionals who are subject-matter experts in their field serve to share their knowledge and understanding of course-specific content and relate services to real-world application.  Study Table provides faculty-led tutoring support where faculty provide additional one-to-one and group instructional learning opportunities.

Tutoring On-Demand (TOD)

TOD provides virtual tutoring services for the Math and Writing Centers, Peer Tutoring, and more, offered during operating hours of Academic Support Services.

Tutoring services are provided by high-achieving students

    • Available for a wide variety of courses
    • May be found in GaVIEW from the Study Aids tab
    • Connects students to online academic support services offered by the Math Center, Writing Center, Peer Tutoring, and more

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides tutoring that focuses on group study and collaboration, with SI sessions driven by students’ needs while being facilitated by trained peer SI Leaders.

Teaching Assistants (TAs)

Teaching Assistantship (TA) provides teaching assistance support for faculty and course-specific academic support for students, while serving to supply liaison support for supplemental teaching and instruction opportunities of assigned curriculum.

Tutor.com

Tutor.com provides 24/7 on-demand tutoring support, online or by appointment, for a variety of subjects, and provides 24-hour written assignment drop-off review.

24/7 Online Tutoring

    • Available for a variety of courses
    • May be found in GaVIEW from the Study Aids tab
    • Receive 24/7 on-demand tutoring support, online or by appointment
    • Receive writing feedback returned within 24 hours for any writing assignment

Online Writing Center

Online Writing Center provides guidance through the writing process with online tutoring and written assignment review.

Online Writing Support

    • Available for all courses and disciplines
    • May be found in GaVIEW from the Study Aids tab
    • May submit papers, email questions, and participate in online tutoring and conferencing
    • Receive guidance through the writing process
    • Receive additional resources and access online guides
